While there is the existence of the belief that style is found in expensive furnishings and decorative pieces, those holding to this are under a misconception. In fact, there are plenty of ways to produce a stylish room within a meagre budget if you are smart. And when I say smart, really I mean you do your homework. For you need not come up with creative ways to design a fashionable space, there are tons of ideas and instructions available from the people who work in interior design.

There is no reason that I can think of as to why you should feel compelled to be the originator of the ideas. The professionals are openly sharing their tips and advice for a very specific reason, they want to assist people in making a desirable home. They recognise that the majority of homeowners don’t have the funds to call in an expert, but still they want to help them get things right. You are not alone in a quest to produce a lovely dwelling, millions of other folks are on the same quest. So, tap into the materials, and inspirations that are just waiting for you to find them, and join the legions of people who are doing exactly the same thing with their free time, and small budgets.

To get you started on your way, let me share with you an example of where to find your resources and my thoughts too. For, it was through scanning magazines, the internet and home design shows that I came to forge an interest in home décor, and look how far it has taken me. Back to my intent, to get you involved. The last project that I followed through on was for the bathroom vanity downstairs in my home. Honestly, it came out looking just as good as the photo I attempted to replicate. Couldn’t be happier with the results.

I have continued to grow my interest and further my education for the last ten years, and the bountiful resources, and abundant generosity of the professionals continues to surprise me. In fact, one way that I like to look at is, they have spent time and money to make their own input available to the general population. If we don’t access their data, then we will disappoint them, and their efforts to share their information will have been in vane. Now, nobody wants that, so seek and ye shall find my home decorating friends.

Believe it or not, many people become so fixated on their future fireplace that they forget a very important thing. If you purchase a fireplace without any consideration as to whether or not it will work well in the room it will be put in you could be making a very large, expensive mistake.

Now, we can see how one could get so mesmerised by the great selection of fireplaces, and get carried away, we aren’t judging, there are some absolutely breath taking designs on the market. But, if you put a completely jaw droppingly gorgeous fireplace style in a room that is in no way similar, you will be doing it a great disservice. Not to mention the fact that it will stand out like a sore thumb, instead of like a dream fit.

In addition, the fireplace also needs to be well paired with your furnishings as well. Take into consideration the lines you are working with along with the fabrics. You can still choose a fireplace that makes your heart skip a beat, but blend in as well. Once you get that straight then you can go crazy over what to put on the mantle.

Dreaming of the day when you can buy those expensive stainless steel appliances to replace the outdated ones you have now? No need to put your wishes on hold. While your finances might not allow for the purchase of new fancy appliances, there is another way to reinvigorate your kitchen. All you need is the motivation to get the job done.

So what do I propose? Painting a metallic finish onto kitchen surfaces can be completed within an afternoon, and the improvement will be major. The world can breathe easier as it now has a liquid stainless steel product to reach for. All you need, other than maybe a friend or two to help get the work done in a jiffy, are a roller, paintbrush, drop cloth, painter’s tape, and obviously the liquid stainless steel. From what I’ve seen, if you are diligent and careful with the application you can create dazzling refinished appliances that any professional would be proud of. Whatcha waiting for? This will boost the look of your kitchen to a whole new dimension, and for very little investment to boot.

Some houses have interesting nooks and crannies that often go without being made use of in any way. While some of these wall indentations, or cut outs are original in design, others came along due to revisions and renovations. Of course whether you have an oddly shaped space because the architect was quirky, or because your flat was formerly an orphanage that has been converted there are things to be done with it.

One of the best of these is to make a bookshelf. It is ever so simple to put up wooden planks, and the hardest part seems to be the measuring of space between shelves. Always opt for a material that you can alter, such as wood, as the likelihood of getting the exact proportions for the strange dimensions is altogether unlikely.

While I am calling these bookshelves, probably because I love them so, they could instead be shelves used for decorative purposes. Depending on how much space exists, this could be the prime spot to feature a collection of Victorian dolls, framed stamps, or family silver goblets.

To fend off the winter blues, I like to daydream about any updates I would like to make to our home décor when spring arrives. This year I have planned to change the colour scheme throughout, and make it more versatile. After much deliberating, and musing the answer that has arisen seems obvious now.

One of the best known ways to create a flexible palate is to play off of natures combinations. They are often altogether well paired and as delightful in form inside as they were outside. The only real decision is which landscape, or environment to choose as the muse.

As we are avid lovers of the seashore, the decision was there all along, a beach palette is what suits us and the space best. We will convert the colours we have lived with for the last five years to ocean blues, sandy beiges, seashell corals. The predominant shades will be blues ranging from true to those with green undertones, just like the waters found at our special beach location. Flooring will remain neutral in those colours found in the flecks of sand, and accessories will pop in peachy pinks.

If your budget limits you to purchasing furniture that is less personable than you would like, then you will take comfort in the fact that you can change that pretty easily in many situations. Take for example a cabinet that comes in one bland style, including uniform pulls. Those knobs are going to be your saving grace, as they are normally easy to remove, and key word here, replace.

The vast array of decorative pulls is so expansive, it can become overpowering. Therefore, we recommend that you have a certain style in mind before you begin your search for new ones. To create something particularly special, you might consider glass pulls, which first arrived on the market in the late 1800’s and continued to be popular through to the 1930’s. The fun of these is that they come in so many colours, and are real attention getters. You can find real bargains on these at flea markets, or reproductions sold in hardware shops are often quite reasonable.

For those accessorising their homes from scratch, things can become overwhelming. Few will have the opportunity to do work on each room independently and to gather those housewares over the course of time. Instead, commonly what happens is that there is a mad dash to getting things habitable, with some decorative touches thrown in, and then further purchases and organisation follows in a piecemeal approach.

What I have experienced is that while you may not have the luxury of taking things at a reasonable pace, or to set rooms up one by one, it is extremely helpful to mentally prepare as if you were. It has always resulted in a much more cohesive result for me.

So, for starters pick a room, any room. I am going to choose the kitchen. Perhaps there is a predetermined theme set by the wall colours, or wall coverings, or maybe it is the exact opposite and you would like to bring in some light and colour. Let’s pretend it is a neutral canvas. Determine what items would be of use to reach that ultimate goal.

To bring light in, use reflective materials like brushed steel, aluminium, or gold on trash bins, containers, and table decorations. Other items that are ideal for this service are glass or acrylic. Jars to hold sugar, salt, pasta, or snacks in are easy to find in either of these materials, and look good enough to leave on counter tops. If you and your family use certain things on a daily basis, such as coffee, or tea then these are ideal for those, as they are readily accessible also.

If colour is lacking, consider hanging dried spices, vegetables, and fruits from a rack hanging down from the ceiling. Hot peppers will bring in red and green, garlic will provide shades of grey, blue and purple, and others can be found to cover the colours you are most interested in bringing into the space. Or you could combine the two recommendations and put red beans, multi-coloured pasta or powdered spices like paprika into glass containers and leave them on display.

One last idea is to put decorative metal art on the walls of the kitchen. You could go with a comical type of oversized silver kitchen utensils around a clock, or playful multi-coloured butterflies and dragonflies chasing one another. The point is, break everything down, in your head, or on paper before heading out. Because although you may have to buy your home accessories in less than an orderly fashion, if you have what you want firmly identified before heading out the stress will be minimised, and the outcome better.

While organising the purchase, and delivery, of our new Sealy memory support mattress I became more educated in the area of memory mattresses than I had ever intended to. My spouse was the one who had done the legwork and decided on this particular mattress, all I was supposed to do was buy it and schedule the delivery. But, being the person that I am I got a little side tracked.

When I pulled the mattress info up on the website I failed to simply place the order as per instruction. Instead, I started to read the key information, and very quickly realised that I was unfamiliar with a great number of the terms being used. I believe most people would have left it there, and simply accepted this as an area that they would admit was not one they were well versed. No, of course this would not be the way I was to precede. You would think that I have tons of extra time on my hands to spend on such things, even though I positively do not.

During my detour I learned the following information, and thought it might be helpful to others to compile it. In a way this makes me feel like I went on this digression for a greater good. What is it they always say, if I make a difference in one person’s life then it was all worth it.

So here it is as I understand it. Tencel is the name of the fabric that was used for our mattress cover, and it is touted as the new age fiber. It absorbs excess liquid and quickly releases it again into the atmosphere. Things get more complicated when you begin to look into the components of Tencel, such as the fact that it is composed of Fibrils, aka tiny hair like cellulose fiber. These Fibrils are arranged in such a way as to maximise absorption, while also cooling. Most importantly in my opinion is the fact that these Fibrils, because of the cooling ability hinder the growth of bacteria.

At that point I moved on to what existed in the makeup of what lay beneath, meaning the Sealy memory support system. However, the twins are calling for me to start dinner and my tummy is grumbling for the same, so I will share this information with you a bit later. Till then I hope you find what I have already described to be of use and maybe even a tad interesting overall.

When faced with making the most of a small room there is one recommendation that I heard several years ago that I now swear by. Though I can’t claim this idea as one I came up with, I will sing its praises from the mountain tops forever more because I know how well it works. Give it a try, and I imagine you will end up doing the same.

Take whatever things you have set aside that you were planning to cram into the space and re-evaluate. Look at the items as though you have just learned that you must make a move far away. It is a game of sorts, and you may think at first it is a bit silly for a grown up to have to resort to this approach. However, only you will know you participated, and only the mind blowing results will be apparent when you are finished with this exercise of purging.

Each thing that you choose to keep will cost you to ship, or transport, so you should be left with the things most necessary. A outpour of money used in order for you to hold on to this articles will be a very strong motivator for you to identify what it is you want/love/need.

Then you can sit back and take a look through fresh eyes at what should stay. As long as you approach it with the mindset that you are genuinely in such a predicament, you should make giant strides. You will probably feel a bit lighter too.

While you might not be aware of it at the moment, you most likely have many delightful things that could be used in groupings to decorate your home. Instead of looking outside of your house for art and artefacts look within it first. A browse through your closets, attic or basement might unveil things you forgot you even had.

After being reintroduced to those plates your Aunt Mertyl bequeathed you, or the wooden toy soldiers your husband collected as a young boy, start to play with their placement in your home. If you prefer not to go on this treasure hunt without a map of sorts, chat with the other members of your household to see what they would like to bring out, or shine a spotlight on that has been hidden away for far too long.

One place that begs for quirky bits and pieces to call home are bookshelves. These personal items, or collectors pieces bring interest to such a stage, and break up the monotony that can be created by row after row of book spines. In fact, you could treat each and every shelf as its own display unit. Arrange interesting items you have uncovered on these and visitors will be captivated by what they can learn about you, or your families personality in this one zone.
